Ketao's top 3 tips to get you started on a keto diet

1. Do a kitchen overhaul

Getting rid of temptation is the easiest and best way to stick to keto.

If you know you don't exactly have the strongest willpower to say no to what's in front of you, especially if it's something you love that isn't keto-friendly, remove it from the picture so you don't have to say no to begin with. If it's not there, it's not going to call your name to eat it.

Once you’ve done that, go through your kitchen and swap out the non-keto foods with keto-friendly alternatives.

If you need to, post a list of keto-friendly foods on your fridge so it’s handy when you need it.

  1. Clean out your kitchen—get rid of carb-laden foods from cupboards, the fridge, freezer, pantry, or anywhere else you may store them
  2. Meal plan—look through keto recipes and plan out your week so you know what you need at the supermarket and you're not panicking trying to improvise
  3. Check food labels—carbs can be sneaky, so ensure you’re checking the nutrition labels for hidden carbs (hint: sauces are a big one!)
  4. Make keto-friendly swaps—swap your grain-based flours for nut flours; get rid of starchy veggies and swap for low-carb alternatives; freeze your high-carb fruits and replace them with fresh berries

Here’s a quick tip:

2. Eat the right amount of keto-friendly foods

How much you eat is a huge dictator of whether or not you will lose weight, gain weight, or maintain.

It's the simple principles of calories in versus calories out. If you burn more than you eat, you'll lose weight; if you eat more than you burn, you'll gain weight. Make sense?

If you’re sticking to keto-friendly foods and still not getting close to where you want, you may need to be a bit stricter on tracking your food intake.

Keto calculators are a great way to find out how much you should be eating for your body and physical activity levels. But also ensure that you:

  • Are sticking to 35g net carbs maximum (total carbs – fiber = net carbs)
  • Eating adequate protein to maintain muscle mass

Once you've nailed those two, you can manipulate your daily fat intake to support weight loss or gain. More fat to maintain or gain, and less fat to lose.

3. Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst

The one downside that often turns people away from keto immediately is what we call the keto flu—a collection of flu-like symptoms that happen as your body adapts to low-carb; usually it happens due to carb withdrawal and electrolyte imbalances.

To avoid it happening or mitigate some of the nasty feelings, here’s what you can do:

  1. Know the symptoms—be aware of what you could feel: fatigue, mental fogginess, headache, muscle aches (don’t worry, they should disappear within a few days)
  2. Increase your water intake
  3. Take some electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and magnesium)
  4. Eat more fats

And there’s one other thing you can do—take Keto Activate. In either a powder form or capsules, Keto Activate is a high-quality exogenous ketone supplement designed to help get you into ketosis quicker.
